THIS RESPLENDENT CREATURE IS THE BANDED FORESTER SPOTTED IN THE CHIRINDA FOREST OF THE EASTERN HIGHLANDS OF ZIMBABWE

If it were not this banded forester in Eastern Zimbabwe, it would be the "Morpho" in the Orinoco River Flooded Forest of Delta Amacuro, Venezuela. Of the "All Creatures Great and Small" among the more spectacular are often those at the larger end of the smaller sizes--such as in the rainforest, or along the tropical ocean reef. This forester was spotted along the way of a bird-watching excursion in Zimbabwe, but it, too, can fly!

It was in the dedication of an award to Roger Tory Peterson (see "Bird Watching") in the Earth Day Birthday in the year before his death that he had been happier with the dedication of a butterfly garden in his honor than in yet another honorary degree to add to the 23 he already had. The forester seen here is a beautiful flying work of art.
