REQUEST FROM ROGER HAIR, NGS PHOTOJOURNALIST,

FOR A PROPOSAL ON A FEATURE OF MY

MEDICAL ADVENTURE TRAVEL

Dear Roger:

I cannot tell you how excited I am to have heard your call to me, from our original shared futile round trip in an ice‑bound Caravan up and over ANWR last year!  All my life, the one journal I have read and the source of most of my secondary education has been the NGS and its special approach to making the world and understandable and habitable place.  It would be a dream to participate in a proposal for NGS to show similar readers the "others" in this world who have had to adapt to quite different environments and needs.

As a "Discovery" and "Adventure Travel" addict with a purpose that is "panetic" (see www.panetics.org) in reducing the infliction of human suffering, I hope that any feature using me can draw a focus on humanitarian concern for the unheard majority passengers on this planet.

I will attach a few items you had requested in split doses to avoid overwhelming your machine's Inbox!

For starters, I send a couple of the photos and items you had referred to:

The Tarahumara Indians and I in the Big Horn Ultra Run

The GWUMC Press Release on the George Award

The announcement of the new book "Out of Assa: Heart of the Congo"

The "signature" for titles and addresses, phones, and emails with web sites

The text of Himalayan High: A Trilogy of Treks and Medical Missions Along the Roof of The World

'98 Himachal ‑‑the Kinnaur Valley and the Spiti Valley of the Himalaya

'99 Nepal‑‑Medical Mission to the Sherpa in Lukla and the Everest Trek

'00 Ladakh —"Kingdom in the Clouds" and Tso Morari

I will attach in the next transmission the '01 Mission to Dharamsala‑‑and hope that you can join in on the July Ladakh, or Sept Spiti, or Oct Nepal treks of '01 !

I have added a couple of photos, but not as many as I will in the next transmission, which will also include the photos from the George Award ceremony in September of 2000.

I had already promised you access to the photojournalism of the collected photo albums, and some of the other text of many other adventures are contained in the "On Line Journal:" on the Home Page http://home.gwu.edu/~gwg  For a real  collection of a photojournalistic autobiographical oeuvre , I complete an annual year‑end review each year of the adventure travels and major events of each year‑‑and I can make these available for the further completion of your proposal.

I will follow this with other items you had requested to see in the next transmission, but, again, I want to thank you for following through on your idea of a special focus on the volunteerism of sharing first world compassionate care for the developing world, no matter how remote and inhospitable.  It has certainly been among the most rewarding efforts of my life, and one that I hope is a highly contagious transmission!

Cheers!

GWG
