LAUNCH THE LONG HAUL TO THE FAR SIDE
THROUGH FRANKFURT AND DELHI TO LEI, LADAKH

JULY 17-19, 2001

I have arrived on the far side of the globe 10 1/2 time zones East and 11,543 feet up on the Karakorum Range, with spectacular views of the Stok Kangri behind me and the distant K-2 and Gasherbruns in Pakistan reflecting the morning light.

This translates to a hollow hungry time lag and slight headache as I poke around the familiar town of Lei, starting up the clinics in Thiksay Gompa--personally it is now a reading on my pulse oximeter of 88% O2 saturation and 60 pulse at GPS mark 34* 09.48 N, 077* 35.00 E

I will begin the clinics now with a total of 24 first-timers and we will see if we can complete the 1800 patients here before we begin the trek up to Lake Tso Morari. Before the gremlins of Cyberspace crash on me as my newly refurbished Dell laptop has failed, I will send this brief message of the beginning of our medical mission to Ladakh-'01.

Cheers from the Tibetan Chang-Thang plateau!
