Dear Scott:

George Sevich called me right after your long talk with him last night.

I had tried to scramble a connection betweeen Delhi where I would be at the end of the first week in August to moscow, and a rendezvous with you on the way through Moscow and a conjoined trip to Kamchatka by the usual cross‑Russia flight on Aeroflot. (see the meltdown of such plans on Jun‑C‑8.

Both for reasons that the Aeroflot flights across Russia from moscow are filled, and that the trip is moved back to mid‑August (probably Aug 20‑‑31, as originally planned), I will scrap these complicated smershing plans to rendezvous from my Himalayan trek into the Russian hunt; besides, as you see from Ravi's note to me, the conniptions the indian government would have about the complexities of trying to carry a rifle through any other port thatn a hunter‑friendly one such as Russia would be nearly impossible.  Which leads us to a transcontinental takeoff out of Alaska as we had been up there last summer, and then a flight over to Petropavlosk from Anchorage, for which flights Jeannie at Ballard travel is already holding the seats for us.

I have heard that you will be talking with George this weekend on the go‑ahead, and I will talk with him after that. My schedule gets rather dense on either side of the dates blocked for the hunt, as you can tell from the attachment Jun‑C‑10.

When we last parted after a night in the luxury surroundings of the abandoned aircraft hangar in Fort Yukon, you were talking about doing a goat hunt in BC.  Such luck!  I just spoke with Christian Elwell (whom you rememeber along with Zack, whom you know even better) and the two of them are going to scout an area for goat hunting in the fall of this year.  If you are interested, you and I may be the first ever clients to go in and take mountain goats in this area of Alaska wher new permits are now released.  So, save these dates!  In the fall of 2001 for the fall of 2002, Christian is going to check on the two of us for such a hunt near Ketchikan in the panhandle.

So, I hope that these connections work out, and will be looking forward to hearing from you

Cheers!

GWG
