Thanks, Matt!

While I was on the phone to Gina, I blocked the June dates to avoid any encroachment from a rapidly filling 2003. (02‑Sep‑A‑2)   So, I will continue to hold those dates and the itinerary you had furnished despite the change in the constitution of the group form pure medical students to mixed medical and pre‑medical.

I remain interested in the other tours, such as the ones to Australia and South Africa, in each of which I have spent some considerable amounts of time, also, but I should be able to cement the schedule by your January 15 dates.  On that occasion I will be abroad in Mindanao Philippines, but will try to monitor from whatever distant sites I can get into my email to find out what the NYLF decisions have been.

I will be near by at most times until the 2003 itineraries begin to emerge at Dec. 30 (see Nov‑A‑2 attached), so let me know any further updates you may have on the China mission.

Thanks!

GWG

Dear Dr. Geelhoed:

I wanted to make sure I had the opportunity to welcome you as a faculty

advisor for the National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF) International Mission

on Medicine in China.  This is great news that you will be able to join us!

Gina Kirila may have already shared information with you about the Mission

in China, but let me recap for reference:

NYLF International Mission on Medicine on China and current scheduled

universities, clinics and cultural highlights:

Beijing:

Peking University ‑ Health Science Center

China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine

China Sports and Science Association (sports medicine)

Great Wall (Badaling Gate)

Summer Palace

Forbidden City

Tian'anmen Square

Xi'an:

Xi'an Provincial Hospital

Daming Gong Rural Hospital‑Community Medical Center

No. 4 Military Medicine University

Qin Shi Huang Terra Cotta Warriors

Big Wild Goose Pagoda

Ancient City Walls

Ban Po Neolithic Village

Chengdu:

      Huanglongxi Clinic visits

      Chengdu TCM University

      Mental Health Hospital

      Children's Village of SOS

      Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Center

      Sichuan Musical Theater

I keep wishing it was May so the programs can begin!  Needless to say I am

excited you will be able to be a part of the NYLF Missions.

On a different note, I do have one update on International Missions.  As I

recall your schedule is very busy, so I wanted to inform you that the

Mission in China which Gina and I had expressed interest in your serving

(China Medicine for Medical School students, Friday, May 30 ‑ Sunday, June

15) is on a tentative HOLD.  What does this mean?  The Mission is still on

schedule, but the enrollment projections are not as high as estimated.  As

such, our admissions department is not scheduled to enroll students in this

mission.  In addition, if/when our admissions department begins to enroll

for our China program, the decision was made to not enroll medical students

but to enroll undergraduates with an interest in medicine or pre‑meds as

like all our other medical missions.

With this news, and with your very busy schedule, I wanted to at least offer

you the opportunity to change programs if you wish.  It is obviously our

goal to have a 3rd mission in China (students will remain as undergrads) but

our admissions department will not be enrolling this program until later in

the year (pending everything going well!)

So I have two questions then:

Would you be interested in serving on another Mission in Australia, China or

South Africa (which would mean different dates)?

Or, do you wish to remain on the 3rd Medical Mission to China with the

understanding that the program may not occur (but if it does, you are still

scheduled)?  Note, I imagine by January 15 a final decision on the 3rd China

Medicine mission would be 100% final so you could make any plans/changes to

your schedule.

I apologize for such mixed news!  If you have any questions about this as

well as if you would like to review the other Medicine Mission dates, please

just email or telephone me and I'd be happy to send them along.  Hope this

email finds you well.  It was great to meet you here at our office!

Best,

Matt Castrina
