Surely!  I will be available at the phone I had listed, and will also try to fax you the article I had mentioned.

I had listed with SafariCare through the Chesapeake Chapter my interests, and my many forthcoming treks to places I will list (as you may see in the Sep‑A‑2 attachment).  I will be leaving for Malawi next month with a lot of donated surgical supplies and medical equipment, and will be taking medical students with me as well as teaching indigenous health care workers there.  You may be able to see the work I have done in the Home Page "On‑Line Journal" or I may attach my last Malawi Mission for the kind of feature information background you had requested.

I will list below the last year's completed series of medical missions and the coming events of the 2003 itineraries.

I have planned a safari next year to Malawi and to Zambia, and had attracted two other surgeons to join me, (one is my most regular hunting partner, and a former surgical resident of mine) on the promise of a lot of very productive donation of their time, but additionally, I hope to combine it with a hunt which will introduce them to the African hunt (on which I have been scores of times.)

I will forward such information as you may need in a large packet to your SCI address if it would be better than through the fax, and surely count me in, in or around, the SCI WDC office for help whenever you can use me!

Cheers!

Medical Missions Just Completed in 2002

Welcome to the Wonder World of International Medical Mission’s experience! Your inquiry tells a lot about you and your interest in pursuing the opportunities; once you have done such a mission, you will not look at medicine, and life, and your future in each again the same way! In August or 2001, the AAMC Reporter wrote an article about the adventures I have pursued with medical students and under the title “Medical Education Goes Extreme” they came up with one quote which is probably one I would have been glad to have written about any one of us:  “Dr. Geelhoed’s proudest achievement is that he has never taken any of his medical proteges on their last medical mission.”  It is a very contagious and habit‑forming experience that is among the most rewarding that can be pursued, particularly at your stage in the medical education process.  I know, since at your stage is when I started—and I have never stopped! I am asked for several ideas and thoughts about how to get started.  Let me direct you to a couple of web sites, and, perhaps, a few people, who, like me, have traveled this road—and many others—before.  I have a somewhat primitive International Medical Education web site that can get you started at www.gwu.edu/~intmeded which can also link you to my own Home Page at http://gwu.edu/~gwg If you click on the “On‑Line Journal” you can review the trip narratives from many of these experiences (I will list a key to several of them later) and also pick up a bit of the philosophy, (click on “Medicine and Health,”) about my own evolution in the process of concentrating in international health opportunities –a somewhat innovative path for an academic surgeon! An intact book about this kind of experience is published in “Out of Assa: Heart of the Congo” by Three Hawks Publishing.  If you surf on over to www.3hawks.com, you will get a sample chpater and how to get a copy—it will at least make the long trip to the far side of the world go faster!  It may also tell you of the frustrations, flexibility, and rewards of this kind of international volunteer service. You could call the publisher directly (703/823‑9833) or try through Amazon.com or one of the other on‑line book services. And, if you are still carrying it when we meet, (Frankfurt, Delhi or along the “Roof of the World”), I promise to autograph it for you!  The schedule for the coming year’s Himalayan excursions is listed in the following series:                 Himalayan Health Exchange 2002 Schedule  K2 ‑ Panamik:  15‑day Medical‑Dental expedition to the K2‑ Karakoram region in the Western Himalayas.January 8 ‑January 22, 2002.  Dharamsala:  Medical‑Dental camp at Dharamsala (north India.)  Dharamsala is located in the North Indian Himalayas and it is home to The 14th Dalai Lama and Tibetans in Exile.  April 18 ‑ May 3 , 2002. Nepal: Kathmandu, Lukla, Everest Trek Route, 15‑day medical trek to the Sherpa of Everest region, NepalMay 12—27, 2002 Spiti :   Medical‑dental expedition to the ancient Tibetan kingdom of 'Guge' with a visit to Dharamsala (Home to The 14th Dalai Lama)June 11 ‑ June 27   2002. Subject: ROAR%20respounse I am responding to your most recent ROAR, to offer my services.

My name is Glenn W. Geelhoed, SCI national member # 200003900 and an active member of the Chesapeake Chapter of the SCI.

I am an active and enthusiastic hunter (my Home Page is http://home.gwu.edu/~gwg which is entitled the Home page of a Hunter/Gatherer") and I have a rather extensive trophy room and inventory of hunts I have done and am planning.

Further, I have been the foil for the PETA folk, since I am the designated spokesman put up against them from the Foundation for Biomedical Research.  I have debated a series of these Kooks over many years (somewhat concerned that my presence gives them platform for the absurdity of their zingers which have emotional appeal for the unthinking) and have faced them off for hours on such programs as Larry King Live.  Though they would like to paint me as a bloodthirsty killer ( I am, after all, to prove their point, a surgeon) it is a rather hard sell since I have been awarded the Humanitarian of the Year Award nationally by George magazine, and a series of other recognitions for compassionate service to the poorest of the world's third world citizens.

I will send you an article, if requested, entitled "That Animals Might Live," which you might use as you need, but I am ready to advance the cause of my SCI membership, and would be happy to be called upon to help.
