STORMY RE-ENTRY ON RETURN FROM ALASKA AND INTO THE PATHWAY OF HURRICANE ISABEL

  1. Index to Sep-B-Series
  2. Re-entry and film processing, mail clearing and Derwood progress, as the new GWU fall semester begins and a new doctoral degree program is initiated.
  3. Derwood devastation and a DC and GWU shutdown by Hurricane Isabel, which will be the occasion for more expensive tree removal and further delays in the construction schedule, set for the bricklaying the day after a long and stormy night.
  4. Aftermath: the official Maryland “Storm of the Generation” and the most extensive power outage from fallen trees: 700,000 in suburban MD and 1.8 million in VA, with the cleanup estimate in months.
  5. The covering note for the forwarding of the first PhotoWorks rolls of the  Alaskan adventure.
  6. Further stormy weather floods the battered DC area, and Derwood’s downed trees, with destruction of two of the places where I had spent most of my last three decades: GWU Hospital and Derwood homebase: with construction begun in the latter, as I attempt to return to running, the ELDP program starts up—ready or not—and I do a Washington Post interview.
  7. Takeoff for a weekend visit to Iowa, the first opportunity for me to see the new house, truck, trailer, and the livestock inhabitants of each in Urbandale IA adjacent to Simpson College campus, where I am even booked to talk with a voice pedagogy class on hearing sound in music.
  8. Visit to the college town of Indianola for a Simpson College tour and talk, and a livestock tour centered around: Porter—at the barn and riding ring, Watson—the newly adopted foxhound, Cherry—the Corgi that plays ball, and Chou the cat—each housed and transported in style, in the new house, Ram 2500 truck, Trailette, and veterinarian office.
  9. Return from Iowa to re-enter DC and Derwood and a week of packing up for the next international trip: Sikkim!.
  10. The end of September brings progress to the Derwood construction, and a rapid swirl of office, home and packing activity for the pending start of Sikkim-03.
