THE ETHIOPIAN SERIES OPENS WITH GONDAR COLLEGE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES

  1. Index to Ethiopia series in Gondar and Addis Ababa.
  2. The long day begins at check out before five am and continues in three jumps to Gondar to a formal visiting professorship, meetings with the Dean and the Chairman of Surgery and a series of lectures and rounds with the new Gondar College of Medical Sciences, and early evening in the Hotel Goha overlooking the Gondar Valley.
  3. GCMS Visiting Professorship: ward rounds and lectures, seeing the quality of leadership in setting standards.
  4. The day begins with a tour of the library and the Operating Theatre, then includes a meeting with the Dean on subjects of collaboration and affiliation between our institutions; in the evening at the Goha I meet a cycling tour group “Tour Afrique,” and Rick Hodes who arrived from Addis.
  5. Final clinical day in Gondar, making teaching rounds with the interns and residents, then senior students, then final lecture, a quick Gondar tour, and a reception dinner with the Dean, faculty and US Embassy staff.
  6. Departure day from Gondar, delayed by mechanical Fokker 50 failure, with return to Addis and tour of clinics, postponing the visit to Mother Teresa clinic  and visit with Rick Hodes and sons.
  7. A full day in Addis Ababa, with a review of the work by Rick Hodes and a visit to Mother Teresa Clinic and tour of the town in preparation for departure from Addis, from Ethiopia, from the Horn of Africa, and from the continent after an eventful three week medical mission in Somaliland and Ethiopia.
  8. The long flights home in two jumps Addis Ababa, Alexandria, London to Washington watching art imitating life:“Beyond Borders” a relief worker renegade doctor in Ethiopia.
  9. My request for an Operation Smile mission, discussed with Skip Williams, and proposed to Bill Magee for the Horn of Africa.
  10. A proposal to the SAIH of MHS and to the Spine Surgery Center of Northern Virginia to adopt a special patient, Mekonnen Girma, from Addis Ababa, for corrective spinal surgery.
  11. The rapid series of changes in Derwood, under new Project Manager, Mike McKesson, and the special artistry of painted tiles, cabinetry, bookcases, cedar and stained hardwood, and fixtures and appliances going in all within a week before furniture delivery the week following.
  12. Cover letter for forwarding the photojournalism from the “Horn of Africa.
