FEB-A-3

OUR FURTHER ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE FINAL PREPARATION FOR DEPARTURE,

INCLUDING A “WISH LIST” FROM OUR HOSTING INSTITUTIONS

FOR DRUGS AND SUPPLIES THAT CANNOT BE PROCURED WITHIN THE SHORT ORDER BEFORE DEPARTURE

January 28, 2004

OK, we may have to try to crack the storage of the medical supplies, and carry out SOME suture (I had also promised Embangweni the part of it they would have got if I had gone there this winter,)  and whatever else fits after the MAP packs are figured in.  I had got a Sportsman's Guide sale on duffel bags, but it is too short a notice to get them here in time.

I have a few supplies of very recent journals, particularly in surgery, and I have my Surgery text "Study of Surgery" stashed in the attic (now trashed by the construction and without electrical connection to the lights needed to find the boxes.  But books and journals are heavy, and I would like to take one each to the institutions we will visit and not more.

Ketamine is certainly not an "over the counter" drug, and we will have to see what they have available locally in the hospitals that we will be working in.  Are we staying in Addis on the way IN?  Hang on to my licenses and BNDD and DEA for the purposes of not getting busted as international drug traffickers.  Saddam has already taken the luxury suite in the lock-up.

I have a neighbor at Derwood, a large industrious family, named Asfaw Fantu from Ethiopia and they are gong to see us when we go to snowy deserted Derwood for our pickup run ? Saturday ? and we may get further Addis confections there.

I will entrust you to hang on to my tickets and passport with yours so that you do not have to make a special run over here to drop them.  make a copy to be left behind, so I can be reached.  Do you have the Hotel Mansour's phone, fax or email address?

I sent you the formal invitations on Gondor, and I am still stymied by the lack of retrievability of the slides and other data I need to retrieve from Derwood storage.  I will try again by whatever glimmer of light of day.

OK on the IAD transit.  I might like to bring my car down to GWU and store it in the Ross hall garage (since I am paying a daily fee anyway!) and we can get one or more of the three offers of transport to IAD for drop-off, a straight shot out 66 from here to there--probably around 6:00 PM.  I would need the transport since, 1) I do not like to leave a vehicle at IAD parked and vulnerable for three weeks at just under $200; 2) I will need a car here on my return without much in the way of baggage in this direction, and I can accomplish that by the Washington Flyer to W Falls Church and Metro in; 3) we need capacity to cart out to IAD the MAP boxes and luggage (typically packed at just under 35 lb per box, with a threesome constituting an order.) So one and one half of our total bag allowance for check in will be drugs, and I am willing to stuff my personal gear (about 30 pounds without books) into a conjoint bag to make room for more of the stuffings of OR goods and expendables.  I already have my light carry-on backpack filled (Mostly sensitive film and computer with discs and adaptors), so my check-in requirements are one half bag--one quarter of my allowance.  Top up the rest ad lib.

Did you pop your first Lariam, or are you going to wait to hallucinate on the flight?

Cheers!

saad called and said that the attatched documents had
been previously prepared for another sponsor and that
their priorities were the few listed in the text.

1. id say we should round up all of the suture we can.
i have a bit here, and it might be worth digging in
derwood.
any ideas on locating some ketamine? if not, hopefully
it will be accessible in adis or hargeisa.

2. packing: when should we do the packing party?
beforehand we need to buy 6 big duffel bags: 70lb
limit x 2 per person with 62" total dimensions each.
know any army-navy surplus stores? juan may be able to
take care of this item..

3. our passports are at the ethiopian embassy getting
their appropriate visas. should be back wed or thurs.
they are also preparing a letter for us regarding
carrying in supplies for gondor/adis.

4. bought tix today. dr. glenn, you flight to gondor
is 7am on 16 feb and returns on 18 feb in the pm. then
you have 3 days in adis for fistula and mother teresa
and return (leave and get to iad) on the 22nd. i think
your ethiopian air flights are pretty changeable. your
total was $1385, on your amex. jay, yours is $1549.

5. saad noor would like to meet with you/us one more
time if possible later in the week.

6. lets discuss transport on sunday nite. my
girlfriend wanted to take me there as did juan for him
- our flight leaves at 9:40p (jay, yours leaves at
4:25p from sfo).
