FURTHER DETAILS EMERGING ABOUT TICKETING AND THE COMMITMENT TO THE TRIP TO DR/HAITI

I will add Huda, me, and Amanda Blockinger (703-931-1991 home, 440-263-0296 cell, akblock@gwu.edu) and Mike Williams (240-604-7970)  and I have not been able to find scaton1 (see above)  The surgeon Avram Cooperman to whom I faxed the of gave me an incorrect email so I do not have that confirmation and I will not add his name in, to make his own later travel reservations if he wishes to join.

Since I know there are a number of students out there who have expressed an interest but have been leisurely about commitment, and they will all come to hound us later for not including them, I have been thinking of sending in a couple of fictitious names--for which I will be billed and which will require the name change by July 2, for which there will be a charge that they will have to cover--but at least there will still be room for them at a cost for their tardiness less than triple the block fares.

So, if I have not heard more by the afternoon ( I have called each of the numbers posted above and left messages) I will add these names totaling 14 and post two more phantoms for stragglers (there will be a surcharge) which I can readjust in name by July 2 for a total of 16 for which we will all be liable if any dropouts occur before July 2 without a substitute, and the individual will be liable if they occur after July 2 with or without a substitute.

Let me know if this meets your approval, and you have the emails for the rest of the group for whom I am trying to make this an affordable as well as enjoyable life-changing experience.

I have run the Mall and have been watching the Folklife Exhibit on Haiti going in--it will be part of the "field trip" for the pre-departure meeting.  The single set of MAP packs are being UPSed to my home for distribution at the time we have our meeting which can be set up here through coordination at GWU.

We are under way!

We cannot "decide to push the deadline back" to July 2 or any other day‑‑I have to flat out purchase the tickets today, and we have until July 2 to substitute the name of one or another on the tickets which will be cut for a given student whose names I need today‑‑not "to whom it may concern" and only one switch is allowed and that is at a $100 penalty.  So, I will need the names today of those committed and paid so I am not eating their reservation.  After today, someone could probably still join, but they would have to make their own travel reservations if possible at what seems like sold out returning flights and with a four fold surcharge. Today is, therefore, the day of decision.  I have squeezed a half dozen in through the Vesta from Rhonda, the GWU med student from Scott Schroth, the Howard student, the microbiology woman Caton and the addition of Huda by pleading her case with Skip Williams to give her the paid time off‑‑what do you have to add to the original list?

I should call Judy, The AA corporate office person before the afternoon to tell her how many I will be faxing with my credit card and names before June 24  (and our discount airfare) is gone at midnight and I won't be near either computer or fax machine.

Cheers!

Doc,

Thought we decided to push the deadline back to July 2? Still have quite a few people trying to go but unsure yet. Did we decide on the block of fifteen seats then?

Am going to talk to a bar owner about having a fundraiser on Juy 3 to pay for our map‑pack and maybe some other meds.

We will need to have a briefing sometime soon for people and this is a good opportunity to collect the money.

Im thrilled Huda is going with us. This is a very good step toward making this a regular activity.

That's right‑‑and I wanted to add hers and the Howard student name to the order when I trigger it today.  Do you have a print out of the names confirmed (and to be paid ASAP?)

Use Huda's office to coordinate our briefings and all details since there is secretarial support there!

Great to hear that you are "in!"  You will love it!

Thanks for your offer of the International Medicine Office to coordinate details on such things as pre‑departure meetings briefings, inoculations advice, etc.  I will relay this note to Bryan Schaaf at the address above.

You had asked about readings.  I attach a copy of an as yet unpublished article entitled "Haiti and Health" written for the human rights organization the Robert F.Kennedy Institute for Human Rights.

Cheers!
