THE HALSTED SOCIETY MEETING BASED IN THE STANFORD PARK HOTEL IN PALO ALTO CALIFORNIA,

ATTENDING THE MEETINGS AND GATHERING WITH FRIENDS

FOR THE PROGRAM OF THE DAY,

AND THEN THE BLACK TIE BANQUET BY NIGHT

September 10, 2004

I had attended all the scientific programs of the morning but had skipped the golf outing and other parts of the social program until the evening session with the group.  I had planned to go out and run in the afternoon, but two things dissuaded me: one was the heat, and the second was the amazing composite stories of the New York World Trade Towers story on the eve of the third anniversary on the TV.   I watched as the events unfolded again.  I also heard a number of papers of amazing results of good studies, which make me somewhat glad I am not fighting the political and economic battles of the chairs and others of my peers in the process I would be in now had the road not taken diverted me from similar paths.  I am even luckier than they are!
