THE PLANS FOR INCORPORATION THE RWANDAN MISSION INTO THE MILLENNIUM VILLAGE PROJECT OF JEFFREY SACHS “ERADICATION OF POVERTY” AFRICAN INITIATIVE

Yes!

Let's work out the details of transport, timing and accommodations with Pastor Jupa, our local coordinator on the site.  This incorpaoration intot he Millennium Village schema would make an extra resource available for both  the RAP (Rapid Assessment and Planning) as well as the longer-term sustainability of the project, which is near the center of each of our interests in establishing this Rwanda link.

I will forward this note to Pastor Jupa and supporters here, as well as the burgeoning number of people who are now eagerly signing up for the Rwanda trip, even ahead of its public announcement of the availability and timing!

Cheers!

Wonderful!

Jeff Sachs will remember my name, and we can talk over more details when I have a chance to go through the attachments.  I will also send you some of the details regarding the rapidly unfolding Rwanda mission, and we may get together before that occasion.

Thanks, and I will get back to you soon!

Dr. Geelhoed, hope you are well and enjoying your holiday.

Last week I went to Columbia University to meet with Dr. Jeffrey Sachs and

his staff regarding a potential collaboration between Physicians for Peace,

the Earth Institute and the UN Millennium Project.

In essence, we are exploring the potential of working with their Millennium

Village Research initiative.  This initiative is currently in about twelve

villages across sub-Saharan Africa - one for each major agro-ecological zone

on the continent. The MRV initiative is a ground-level scientific effort

aimed at identifying the best ways to implement the UN Millennium Project's

integrated, village-level recommendations for rural Africa. The initiative

aims to (i) provide rigorous proof of concept for integrated,

community-based, low-cost interventions to meet the Millennium Development

Goals in rural Africa; (ii) identify mechanisms for national-level scaling

up of community-based interventions to support the design of national

MDG-based development strategies; and (iii) engage donors to scale up

village-level support across Africa. All Millennium Research Villages will

be located in countries where the Millennium Project is also supporting the

broader national programs to scale up investments for the MDGs. The Project

will help to link the lessons from the villages to the national planning

processes, and vice versa.

The healthcare piece of the initiative is focused mostly on maternal and

child mortality and infectious diseases, principally malaria.   Countries of

interest include:  Ethiopia; Kenya; Senegal; Ghana; Yemen; Rwanda; Uganda;

Mali; Malawi; Tanzania and Nigeria.  Several of which, I know you have a

special interest in.   I've attached some documents (which are probably more

than you every needed or wanted at this time.)

Do I know exactly what role we would play.not yet.  We are still exploring.

But they have indicated an interest in your upcoming Rwanda trip and have

asked if there might be some possibility of them setting up a visit to the

village there, which is in rural Kigali, as I understand it.

This partnership has huge potential for our expanding work in Africa.   I

just wanted to get a gut check from you about your personal interest in this

project before we move to far forward. I value your experience and expertise

in this area.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Dear Ron,

Attached is the information that I promised you. I am also sending the link

to web site of the new foundation that is helping with the implementation of

Dr. Geelhoed, I received this email this morning inviting you and your team

to visit this Millennium Village.  Do you think your schedule will allow?

We would have a PFP "agenda", i.e., asking you to assess for us the long

term medical education and training  potential there for PFP.

Dr. Sconyers,

I am an medical/health intern with the Millennium Villages Project in Rwanda

and

would love to meet with Dr. Geelhoed and his team when they come to Kigali.

Our village is located in Nyamata District not too far from Kigali and the

district hospital, as is the case throughout Rwanda, could greatly benefit

from

supplemental training for physicians and nurses.  If you think the PFP team

will have time to come out to Nyamata this trip, I can arrange plans with

the

Nyamata District medical director and district hospital head physician.
