A LISTING OF PROPOSED MEDICAL MISSIONS WITHIN THE COMING YEAR FOR MMHOF

Thank you Susan!

I had spoken with Dr. Conway early this week after having sent him a letter with the nominations for MMHOF consideration and listed the forthcoming missions as they are being planned.  A few of these have dates that will be flexible--some revolving around events here (students exam and graduation schedules as well as "matching program" dates) and some revolve around ambiguities on the other end ( the instability around elections in Afghanistan and Haiti, and travel restrictions or outright bans by the State Department which had canceled the last recurrent Haiti mission.)

I will attach the letters we exchanged along with the probable visits to the two nominees I had suggested in Sudan and Ethiopia, respectively.  The ones with the most precisely fixed dates are, of course, those I had just completed, and each of these have requests for repeat missions in the coming year (Ghana, Eritrea, DR, Sudan, Malawi, Honduras, Mexico.)  I will also list the new major affiliations of new groups that organize multiple missions each year (Operation Smile, which you know well, and Medical Ministries International, and Physicians for Peace, Samaritans Purse, Christian Reformed World Relief, World Medical Mission, Project Cure etc.)

For now, I will list the ones I am organizing now, am planning to repeat, have committed, scheduled, and those being planned with dates as yet unfixed.

2007--

February---Surgical mission to Asmara Eritrea in Orotta Hospital, Halibet Hospital, and Hazhaz Hospital, Asmara, Eritrea through Physicians for Peace and Dr. Haile Mezghebe and I (spalmer@physiciansforpeace.org and hmezghebe@fac.howard.edu)

Then--return to AFRICA (Sudan, Ethiopia, Somaliland and/or Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center, Moshe Tanzania)

Then--return to Haiti as cited above

As Hurricane Katrina and Indonesian Tsunamis  have proven, at any time something urgent can pop into this flexible schedule of fluid itineraries, and there will likely be more, rather than fewer missions intercalated within the tentative schedule projected.

I will keep you posted as the dates for each become firmed up.

Keep up the good MMHOF work!

Dear Dr. Geelhoed,

Thank you for the forward of the photos from your trip to New  Orleans.  Dr.

Conway wanted to know if you had the chance to formulate a  List of Medical

Missions he had requested of you in his e-mail on the 26th of  September.  Would you be so kind as to send us a list of future missions  (dates, destinations,

person in charge, length of mission and other pertinent  details) we would

deeply appreciate it.  Also any information that you may  have  on other medical missions scheduled by others for 2006 would enable those  med and non-med students interested in going on a medical mission to  schedule their mission trips more effectively. We would like to include  this information on our web site that we are working  on getting  up and running in the near future. Thank you!

With kind regards,
