DERWOOD SPRINGTIME IN FULL FLOWER

Most places I have lived, particularly in the northern woodlands, autumn is the most spectacular season of the year, and the colorful fall glories of this time of year are poignantly brief--the season is short, and the daylight is even shorter. In Maryland, I would give my vote to Spring--the wonderful blossoming of the floral trees: the Easter-time Washington tidal basin cherry trees are renowned, but the Derwood April azaleas, a floral reminder that we are part of the old South, and then the May Rhododendrons, a Tibetan legacy, are also seen in their brilliance which lasts longer. The days are lengthening, life is sprouting very green around us, the birds are singing lustily on their passage through the Derwood woods along the Eastern flyway, and there is hope for a new go at life--hope springs vernal.
