A PRETTY MID-SUMMER’S WEEKEND ON THE RUN

AND “AT HOME” AT DERWOOD

WITH AN UNDECLARED NEGOTIATION ATTEMPT,

AGAIN, AT CHURCH

JULY 7—9, 2001

When I dropped Joe and his kids off at almost midnight after the fireworks display last night, I said I would see him soon, about five hours later.  He had said he wanted to do only a “fast short” run, largely since he ha to be back to do some chores, and wanted to postpone the long run I had planned down the Cap  Crescent Trail to the Post Office Pavilion.  I said: “Joe, the next race we do, there won’t be many people who are running fast, but there will be NO ONE running SHORT!”

But Joe will be off on Friday, and therefore he would like to do my long PtP on Friday.  So, we did 12 miles early, and in cool beautiful weather—perfect!  We went so far and fast that we maintained an eight minute mile pace, and actually finished it in 1:47, or about 8 ¼  pace.  I always carry Joe around the stables to have him stick out his hand to touch one of the horses, this time a big brown gelding named Louie.  He could scarcely believe the pace we did, so I told him I was congratulating myself for moving that gelding back to the half way point on the trail.

I did chores, including the packing up for a bit of next week’s takeoff for Ladakh, and the household chores such as laundry, cleanup and haircut, with the plan to get all the grass mown and outdoor work down next weekend so that it will not be overgrown upon my return.

I spent an extraordinary amount of time on the opening and the starting up of the Garmin GPS III Plus and its very complex programming modes.  I also opened the world atlas discs which will take me forever to figure out, including the downloading of information of one of the places from the disc to the GPS. At this moment, it was all I could do to get the “HOME” fix marked.  I will see what this can do as I am traveling with both systems as well as the Magellan Pioneer unit I have been using for the last several years.

I was awakened by a phone call from Judy, who said Michael would have been on the other phone but for the fact that the other phone was out, and I never did talk with him.  She wanted to know why I was so late in finding out since they thought that I saw my email everyday, and why, if I did not know where they might be, why not look up the number for the Methodist Hospital, when I already knew where she would be? After all, all the rest of their friends had found them there.  It was a little harder to explain how my calls leaving voice messages even after the twins had been born and I was still unaware of that had not been responded to.  It seems that Devin is still in the NICU and is getting his scalp vein IV pulled with his first feeding through NG tube of breast milk.  They have been going there four times a day to hold him.  Jordan is nursing well at home in the crib in the bedroom, not to be moved to the nursery until his brother arrives.  The dogs have been licking his feet, although they want to lick his face.  It is possible that the two will get together in the next few days, but that will not be because Jordan would be allowed back into the hospital when they visit, but Devin may come home, but no one is giving dates.  Judy’s sister and grandmother are visiting, but they will be going home on Monday.  It seems that Devin is now breathing room air, after being on O2 for several days following treatment with both surfactant and steroids.
