WELL-WISHERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD WELCOME

THE NEW TWIN GRANDSONS,

WHOM I SEND THEIR FIRST PHOTO (FROM THEIR FIRST FIFTEEN MINUTES) TO SCORES OF FRIENDS,

ON THEIR THIRD DAY OF LIFE WHEN I FIRST READ

ABOUT THEM

July 5, 2001

The message could have come by the U S Post, and still made it at the same time despite the Fourth of July holiday interposed.  I still have not heard, despite a half dozen calls, but at least I have the one brief paragraph and a photo to send in announcing the event, and all of the globe has sent back notices of glad wishes.

DELAYED FIRWORKS WITH JOE AND HIS KIDS

I came in very late with popsickle stickiness all over the newly washed Bronco’s back seat in which the car seats for two small fry had to be transplanted among the running gear they displaced. I had promised Joe when we ran on Fourth of July morning that we would try to get the kids out for a Fourth fireworks display, but it was rained out—even the rain day for some was rained out.  But Wheaton Plaza would be the site for the Friday night fireworks, and I packed up Papa Joe and the two kids, Maria age 6, and Joseph age 4—same as Andrew William, and now Michelle the same age as the twins.

I was the one to entertain the kids, with several potty breaks, and a “whatever you would like” stop at the Dunkin Donuts.  But, upon the return to the blanket spread out with a good site for the fireworks two hours later an interloper arrived—the Good Humor truck arrived and that gave a fair amount of whining over how the chocolate donuts were not what they had wanted after all. There were a lot of attractive nuisances around such as the multicolored necklaces and the other fiberglass colorful gizmos which gave another round of desiderata.

We played with them for a while until the fireworks, including introducing them to the Salvadoran families on two sides of us and the Malaysian family on the other side.  The big fireworks display was good for the thrills and squeals of the first timers.  As a reward for their good behavior, I suggested they could have whatever they wanted from the Good Humor truck.  Little Joseph said “I am going to carry this home to show to Mommy, and when she sees it, she’s going to be just so happy!”

It is good to have at least one time in life when all of your happiness is assured by a dripping popsickle stick of bubblegum  sherbet.  A lot of that is still in the Bronco where they fell asleep as the popsickles  sticks dripped off into the recesses as their car seats twisted off the seatbelts.

So, I have had the opportunity to be Grandpa, today, day five of the twins, after all..
