Subject:     Your friend at SANG

Dear Habib:

I have not heard recently from your friend and mine at SANG.  I hope this is not a result from the discredited and despicable relationship which I have learned about only form a distance in the contracting GWUMC tried to do to exploit the Saudis through a part‑time non‑practicing ENT with a GW letterhead affiliation at Holy Cross who had parlayed his influence between Duke Yale and GW to broker the deal.

Two years ago I went to lunch with the Prince twice, introducing him to Alf Hiltebeitel as he became the new head of the Human Sciences program in which I had matriculated.  (I am eight years out and still ABD.)   I had interested the Prince in getting a Human Sciences PhD, and brought over Peter Caws to discuss this further as the founder of the multi‑disciplinary program.  At that point I was one of the references for the Prince's application to the Human Sciences program, but have heard nothing further, since he may have been turned off by some of the post‑modern thesis topics on everything from "Queer Theory" to militant feminism.

It is a new era now with several initiatives in Islamic philosophy and Humanitarian programs such as Health.  I would like to introduce each of you to Peter Hotez, MD, the new chair of a new Department called Microbiology and Tropical Medicine, in which I have an additional appointment as professor.  We are beyond the stage of developing vaccines‑‑although such work is in progress‑‑and attempting to assemble a World health team for humanitarian benefit.  You are aware of my won activities in this area.  Now, there is opportunity to expand this into a truly global undertaking with the right support, and I believe the leaders might be the kind of humanitarian effort the prince was looking out for when we had first met and continued to discuss the avenues for such development.

I would like to present the working papers on "Contagion and Conflict in the Islamic World," "Vaccines as Instruments of Foreign Policy" and set up a meeting‑‑perhaps in the same luncheon format we had first used at the Watergate for introductory discussions of such programs as we now are equipped to pursue with the right vehicle.

Could you please facilitate the reopening of such a discussion with SANG?

Thanks!

GWG
