THE STARTLING CHANGES IN SCHEDULED EVENTS

WITH THE CANCELLATION OF ONE MAJOR RACE

IN THE UNCERTAINTIES OF WAR

AND THE MEASURED OUTBREAK OF HOSTILITIES

Dear Runner:

The Washington DC Marathon is on as scheduled and we have no plans to cancel the event. We are working closely with both local and federal officials. The safety of our runners is tantamount! We certainly hope to see all of you in the coming days and we expect large crowds cheering you on.

The final runner e-mail will be coming to you on Thursday! You can check your bib number on line now! Head to www.washingtondcmarathon.com and click on the button on the upper right corner. The bib number you see on active.com is the correct bib number for you. The bib number you received on the postcard is incorrect. Please take a few minutes to head to the site and correctly write down your bib number to save you time when you arrive at the expo. There was a programming issue with our files which inadvertently printing the wrong numbers. Please just type in your first name or last name and hit enter.  Do not type in your full name or state.

It may be century‑record snow in Denver, but here in DC we have our own distractions.  Yesterday I ran around the Mall in the cold wind around the outside of the police barricade ribbons while they extracted the "Farmer in the Pond" from his John Deere, and I thought better of running today since it is cold and raining‑‑and I should be tapering off for this weekend's Marathon

This last minute email has changed all of that.

With the DC marathon canceled "for security reasons" against the wishes of the mayor and DC Council who went to some political risk to support it, and without refunds, enrolling the paid runners in an uncertain "next year's" event, I immediately went "On‑Line" to register with the same for‑profit group for the inaugural Frederick Marathon, March 30 open until March 29. As soon as my credit card hit the computer, they closed this race, too, so that I will be looking for alternatives for a long run in advance of the Bull Run Run.

The deliberate and measured start of the Iraqi action has sent a signal to the Iraqi Army that the specific target is the leadership‑‑and that brought out Scud missiles on Kuwait‑‑which, even to this moment‑‑Iraq denies having any Scud missiles.  So, I believe one can judge their credibility for denial of having any WMD‑‑which will make the French look quite silly when the caches are opened by somewhat more effective "Inspectors," shortly

OK, so these are also just opinions, but at least they are on the way toward something verifiable, and that will remove some of the uncertainty which has unsettled everything.  And the cancellation of the DC marathon seems more like a financial than a safety issue.  But, it is on to the next event!

Due to security issues, we are canceling the 2003 race.  All registrants will automatically be deferred to the 2004 race, which will be held on March 21st.

We apologize, however we feel that it is in the best interest of all runners, families, spectators and residents of the District of Columbia.

No one is more disappointed by this turn of events than the organizers.  While we, until late this afternoon, believed that a successful race was possible we are not willing to jeopardize a safe celebration in the current environment.
