Marathon in the Parks Expected to Draw 1,000 Runners

Nearly 1,000 runners from across the country will participate Sunday in Montgomery County's fourth annual Marathon in the Parks, running a 26.2‑mile course mostly through parkland.

"It's an extraordinary thing where you can run on hard surface trails in the parks," said Ken Nicholls, executive director of the Montgomery Parks Foundation, which is sponsoring the race along with Montgomery County Road Runners. "For a race conducted in a metropolitan area, that is quite an extraordinary thing. It showcases Montgomery County's outstanding park system."

The race begins at 7 a.m. at the Shady Grove Metro station in Gaithersburg, near Frederick and Redland roads, and finishes at Woodmont and Bethesda avenues in downtown Bethesda.

Money raised from the marathon will be used to support park programs.

Runners and volunteers may register online until midnight Friday by visiting www.marathonintheparks.com. Registration also is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Leland Recreation Center, 4301 Willow Lane, Chevy Chase.

Major road closures during the race are the following:

· Veirs Mill Road will be closed between Twinbrook Parkway and Parklawn Memorial Park from 8 to 9:50 a.m.

· Randolph Road will be closed between Rocking Horse and Veirs Mill roads from 8:15 to 10:10 a.m.

· Connecticut Avenue will be closed between Jones Bridge Road and East West Highway in Chevy Chase from 9:10 a.m. to 12:10 p.m.
