“TWO HUNT THEMES”

The "Hunt" can mean at least two kinds of activity. An old hound like "Watson" (see later picture in the attached photos) it might know from the chase of a fox in front and a galloping, jumping herd of well‑bred horse livestock behind (see Porter and his rider in the back half of the roll.) The other kind of Hunt might include "closing" in on the prey being stalked and actually "rendering it into possession", either with rifle or fly rod‑‑as seen in the front half of the recent roll of photos attached.

These two "hunt" themes have been interwoven in the remodeling plans of Derwood, which were temporarily put on "hold" by the Tricentennial Oaks of Derwood trashed and crashed by Hurricane Isabel, which dropped major timber on the building project. That has been resolved on an "emergency" basis yesterday to clear the rebuilding site.

This process involved a 150 foot Sky Crane, which suspended a Guatemalan named Ishmael from San Marcos, with several of his home town buddies and one Hondureno holding a rope attached to his waist belt to pull him away from the falling trunk as he swung in the breeze with a bucking roaring chains saw (an OSHA case study in high hazard, that would make Bering Sea crab potting look like a Caribbean cruise!)

In three hours (at the cash‑in‑hand price of a full‑size SUV) the trees were cleared. A new chipper called the "Intimidator" capable of chewing up everything up to 26 inch diameter logs went to work on all but the main trunks (to be picked up by a lumber man who considered that this would make a superb white oak flooring to extend my hardwood floors‑‑so, I may be buying back my own lumber!)

But, now the framing‑in and enclosing of the addition will proceed on a fast‑forward schedule, possibly completed in the period of my absence in the next three weeks, to enclose the two hunting themes seen on the Photo Works roll attached in the "Hunt Room."

I leave tomorrow for a medical mission in Sikkim, half a world away, and in the shadow of Kanchenchunga, third highest mountain peak on Planet Earth.
