THE INVITATTION TO THE POST-COMPS MAY
PARTY,
AND THE FINAL PREP FOR “INTO
February 28—March 1, 2006
The Mindanao Mission students did a good presentation with their Power Point Presentation at which a few of the eighteen participants in the coming Rwanda mission were present, each of whom plans to attend the Wednesday evening “Packing Party” to get set for Rwanda. The post-presentation summary overview can be seen appended to the 06-Feb-B-10 announcement of the event.
The final pre-Africa prep is underway. Among other things I have done at Derwood is take advantage of the brief winter, when the woods are apparently dead but at this moment snow-free, and I have arduously cleared the woods of all downfalls I could manually haul out of the downfalls and branches cracked by the winds. When I had been chipping away at this earlier, it made a tempting target for someone to decide that the woods really needed a bunch of tree trash so they dumped a load of their own. So, the piles of brush of my won making along with that which I had to re-clear form that which is “borrowed” from someone unknown are stacked very high, awaiting a pickup truck for several loads to be carted away from the drive, now rimmed with such ramparts. I also cleared the Leopold Terrace side of the woods, where the tree branches were in the minority, unfortunately, form the beer bottles and plastic trash I had to pick up. But, now, before the greenery of spring overwhelms the ground cover, I have made a near-lawn-like forest floor, in time for the coming of the green shoots I see already poking through the dense leaf litter. Since the Game Room is still dark with an electrically-shorted ceiling hole where recessed lighting should be, I have to turn my attention to the woods, since it is only outward that I can look now to get a cheery venue!
For the purposes of using the Derwood venue for a cheery meeting place, I had offered it for April 1 to the Chesapeake Chapter of the Safari Club International, which may consider it for a catered reception for donors to the club. If I am doing that preceding the Comps (and the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler and other events in a very dense Spring) I had thought of a good time for our Cohort 16 of ELDP to come together to complete our bonding of the ordeal through the Comps. So, I have appended the invitation for them for May 5, which precedes the Governor’s Bay Bridge Run and other events of some magnitude around the first of May:
THE RITE OF
SPRING (PASSAGE?)
FOR THE
POST-COMPS PARTY
I'm out---on the wing during this weekend's tea
time, "Into Africa."
I had looked over our May ELDP schedule and have come up with an idea I had
discussed briefly with Maryann and Joke:
We will need a time, around the first of May, to gather away from
Ashburn to celebrate and commiserate, and being a month (a respectable interval
for a grading period) we should have the results of oral and written Comps by
May 5.
I note that Friday evening May 5 is the single
exception to the rule of a late departure from class, since as it is now
scheduled we will be out by 5:00 PM.
This is Friday, not Saturday, so we will not have the usual Saturday PM
scramble to depart by road or air.
I suggest we have a Post-Comps Party, (dare I say
"celebration?") on Friday May 5 at around 6:00 PM or whenever we can
arrive at my home en masse after class.
We can compare, contrast, synthesize or never again speak about
theorists you can now "let go"--until it comes time for another
defense, for which we will all probably not be together as a bonded group. (Note to Bill T: You did post bond,
didn't you?)
I had proposed this idea to Maryann and to Joke
since I will be absent in Rwanda next ELDP weekend when it might be discussed
as to who would be in favor of 1) An event, 2) Venue, 3) Attendees invited by
the Cohort beyond our faculty who might like to help you celebrate then, or
support you through the really hard part: the grueling arduous "Candidacy
phase." I will go along with the
Cohort consensus. To help you in that
deliberation now, or to find me in May, I attach a brief set of Derwood
directions.
What is past
is prologue--let's mark the boundaries!
Cheers!

Hello Cohort,
Hoping all is well with everyone. The past couple of weeks have gone by so
swiftly especially since we are having so much FUN
studying for COMPs in our
spare time while we crank out our other
assignments. Oh yeah, and while we
also try to maintain some semblance of a life, a job
and for many, a family,
too.
WE look forward to sharing, trying to fill in the
gaps of some of those
notes we are studying that may not make total sense
since that Saturday Night at
8:30 PM when we first scribbled them.
This is the Tea Time Reminder for Saturday, March 4th at 10:00 AM EST.
Please confirm so we will know to anticipate hearing
your cheerful voice.
